Microsoft is prolonging the deadline for extended Windows 10 security updates until October 2027. This means users will gain more time to switch to an up-to-date operating system.
Good news for everyone still using Windows 10 on their computers: Microsoft is prolonging their Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for private individuals for another year. Qualifying devices will therefore now receive important security updates until 12th October 2027.
More time – but no reason to delay on an upgrade
Regular support for Windows 10 already ended on 14th October 2025. Since then, it is only devices taking part in the ESU program which still receive further security updates for newly discovered vulnerabilities.
Originally, the program was set to end in October 2026. Now it has been extended to October 2027, there is more time to carefully plan switching to Windows 11 or a new device.
Who can use these security updates?
This offer is meant for private individuals running Windows 10 version 22H2. You can register directly via Windows Update.
The following options are available:
- Free-of-charge participation when using a Microsoft account.
- Alternatively, users can register using a local account and pay.
Devices already registered will automatically receive all security updates until October 2027.
Our recommendation
These extended security updates are a sensible, if temporary solution – they will not replace an up-to-date operating system though. You should therefore use this additional time to future-proof your device.
We would recommend the following:
- Always install security updates straight away.
- Check whether your computer fulfils the conditions required to run Windows 11.
- If it is impossible to update to Windows 11, you should plan on replacing your device soon.
