And that is exactly why cyber-criminals particularly target mobile devices during the holiday season.<\/p>\n<p>If you act carelessly while out and about, you risk losing your data, having your accounts hacked or suffering financial losses. You can however significantly reduce these risks with just a few simple measures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Before your trip: Prepare your devices<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, you should check and prepare your mobile devices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Install the latest security updates for your <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Operating system&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A program run on a device to manage system resources, such as processor, storage media and input and output devices, and which offers these resources to application programs (software). Some well-known operating systems are Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS.&lt;\/div&gt;\n\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{&quot;attribute&quot;:&quot;data-cmtooltip&quot;, &quot;format&quot;:&quot;html&quot;}]\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">operating system<\/span> and apps.<\/li>\n<li>Remove any unused apps or old user accounts.<\/li>\n<li>Create an up-to-date <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Back-up&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Data back-up, where electronic information (data) is copied to an external storage medium (e. g. an external hard drive). Back-ups are generally run at regular intervals.&lt;\/div&gt;\n\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>back-up<\/span> of your data and photos.<\/li>\n<li>Activate your screen lock with a PIN, finger print or your face recognition feature.<\/li>\n<li>Activate functions like &ldquo;Find my&rdquo; or &ldquo;Find my device&ldquo;.<\/li>\n<li>Save vital telephone numbers separately.<\/li>\n<li>Depending on your holiday destination, it is advisable to use a simple second mobile phone with only the basic functions you need and to leave your main private phone at home.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is especially when travelling that a lost or stolen smartphone can quickly become a problem, in particular if it contains saved payment data, e-mails or access data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Be wary of public WiFi networks:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Free Wifi offered by hotels, airports or caf&eacute;s is handy, but frequently not secured. Cyber criminals can try to read your data when you access them or to offer fake hotspots.<\/p>\n<p>You should therefore remember the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use your mobile data wherever possible.<\/li>\n<li>Only connect to official hotel or restaurant WiFi.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid sensitive activities such as e-banking via public networks.<\/li>\n<li>Deactivate automatic WiFi connections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Virtual Private Network (VPN)&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Designates a virtual private (self-contained) communications network. VPNs are generally used to connect a device via an existing (unsecured) network, for instance the Internet, to another (secured) one, for instance a company network, in a safe manner. Attackers use &amp;lt;a href=&amp;quot;https:\/\/www.ebas.ch\/en\/phishing\/&amp;quot;&amp;gt;phishing&amp;lt;\/a&amp;gt; to obtain confidential data from unsuspecting Internet users. These might for instance involve access data for your e-banking facility or account information of online shops. Perpetrators abuse their victims&rsquo; good faith and helpfulness by purporting to be, say, an employee of a trustworthy financial institution.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;There are a variety of other variations such as Vishing (voice phishing or phone phishing), Smishing (SMS \/ text phishing) and QR phishing in addition to classic phishing via e-mail.&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\n\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>phishing<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the summer holidays, faked messages all around travel, bookings or parcel deliveries will start piling in. Particularly popular:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>faked booking confirmations<\/li>\n<li>purported problems with your credit cards<\/li>\n<li>text or WhatsApp messages on purported flight changes<\/li>\n<li>faked messages from hotels or tour operators<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Don&rsquo;t just click on any old ink without thinking, and don&rsquo;t open any suspicious attachments. Always closely check senders and websites.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Careful with USB charging stations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Public USB charging stations at airports or in railway stations could well be manipulated. There is a risk that data are scanned or <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Malware&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The term is made up of the terms &amp;quot;malicious&rdquo; and &amp;quot;software&rdquo;.
