As reported by cybercrimepolice.ch, some alarming messages can suddenly appear when visiting otherwise uncritical websites, faking purported <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Virus&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Although every user is still aware of this term, there are generally hardly any real (company) viruses in circulation any longer today. A classic (computer) virus infects existing files on a device in the hope that one of them is passed on to another user. If malware does not make any attempt to actively distribute itself, you call it a virus. If malware however is able to also spread automatically, e. g. by e-mail, you call it a worm.&lt;\/div&gt;\n\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>virus<\/span> infections or severe system errors.<\/p>\n<p>Such warnings don&rsquo;t originate from Windows, macOS or anti-<span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Virus&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Although every user is still aware of this term, there are generally hardly any real (company) viruses in circulation any longer today. They look deceptively real, often take up the entire screen and are often very difficult to close. Sometimes there is also a voice message asking you to ring a support number immediately.<\/p>\n<p>When calling, victims end up at a call centre where attackers are impersonating support staff of such large corporations as Microsoft or Apple. They claim to have discovered a dangerous infection and demand money for repairs which are allegedly required.<\/p>\n<p>They also urge their victims to install remote maintenance software, allowing them to obtain direct access to their computer. Once inside, they direct victims to payment pages or to open their e-banking facilities. They aim to trigger payments or to obtain confidential information such as credit card or access data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is how to protect yourself:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ignore such warnings. Don&rsquo;t call the telephone numbers shown.<\/li>\n<li>To close these messages: Windows: Open your Task Manager using CTRL + ALT + DEL and close down your <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Browser&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A special computer program to display websites on the World Wide Web (WWW) or data and documents in general. The most important browsers used on the Internet are Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Apple Safari.&lt;\/div&gt;\n\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>browser<\/span>. Mac: Use CMD + OPT + ESC to open the &ldquo;Force Quit&rdquo; window and close your <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Browser&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A special computer program to display websites on the World Wide Web (WWW) or data and documents in general.
