Next to text, &ldquo;mails&rdquo; can include different content such as images, website and multimedia elements plus file attachments. In addition, senders can include a variety of metadata, for instance their return address, subject line, urgency level or read receipts.<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, e-mails present various risks. The biggest one is posed by any file attachments. Since you can basically include any number of files in a mail, it is possible to smuggle in malicious content this way, too, for instance <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Malware&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The term is made up of the terms &amp;quot;malicious&rdquo; and &amp;quot;software&rdquo;. Malware is the generic term for software which executes malicious functions on a device (such as viruses, worms, Trojans, ransomware).&lt;\/div&gt;\n\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>malware<\/span> or Microsoft documents (in Word, Excel etc.) containing dangerous <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Macro&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Some programs (for instance Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat) allow users to automate certain actions using small programs &ndash; so-called macros, actions or scripts. However, attackers also like to abuse these to embed malicious code (malware) in seemingly innocuous-looking documents.&lt;\/div&gt;\n\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>macros<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The same goes for e-mails containing links. These could lead to a <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Phishing&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;This term is made up from the words &amp;quot;password&rdquo; and &amp;quot;fishing&rdquo;. Attackers use &amp;lt;a href=&amp;quot;https:\/\/www.ebas.ch\/en\/phishing\/&amp;quot;&amp;gt;phishing&amp;lt;\/a&amp;gt; to obtain confidential data from unsuspecting Internet users. These might for instance involve access data for your e-banking facility or account information of online shops. Perpetrators abuse their victims&rsquo; good faith and helpfulness by purporting to be, say, an employee of a trustworthy financial institution.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;There are a variety of other variations such as Vishing (voice phishing or phone phishing), Smishing (SMS \/ text phishing) and QR phishing in addition to classic phishing via e-mail.&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\n\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>phishing<\/span> website or one infected with <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Malware&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The term is made up of the terms &amp;quot;malicious&rdquo; and &amp;quot;software&rdquo;. Even e-mail sender addresses (data contained in the &ldquo;from&rdquo; field) can be faked so that it looks like a message originates from a trusted person or institution. <strong>You should therefore always handle any links, attachments and senders with great care.<\/strong> The one thing considered largely harmless nowadays is the actual text content (body) contained in e-mails.<\/p>\n<p>Messenger services such as WhatsApp, Telegram or Facebook Messenger are usually proprietary apps of the <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Provider&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;This is the provider of access to the Internet, i.e. the organisation or company enabling users to connect their device to the Internet.&lt;\/div&gt;\n\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{&quot;attribute&quot;:&quot;data-cmtooltip&quot;, &quot;format&quot;:&quot;html&quot;}]\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">provider<\/span> concerned, who apply totally different security standards in turn. It is therefore impossible to provide a general risk assessment. Since these apps allow you to send a variety of content such as images, videos, links or file attachment, you should basically apply the same safety measures you use with e-mails.<\/p>\n<p>Short Message Service messages, &ldquo;SMS&rdquo; for short, pose few risks in comparison. As they are text-only messages in their original format, there is no chance of introducing any malicious content. However, links contained in an SMS can still lead to a malicious website. Caution though! <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Provider&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;This is the provider of access to the Internet, i.e. the organisation or company enabling users to connect their device to the Internet.&lt;\/div&gt;\n\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{&quot;attribute&quot;:&quot;data-cmtooltip&quot;, &quot;format&quot;:&quot;html&quot;}]\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">Provider<\/span>-specific formats such as iMessage by Apple or Samsung Message could contain additional content where it is difficult to judge their risk potential. Similar to e-mail sender addresses, you can also fake the phone number of a text sent, so that it appears to originate from a well-known person or company.
