Make sure that you don&rsquo;t end up in a cyber trap though!<\/p>\n<p>The Check&nbsp;Point security company has published statistics indicating an alarming rise in new domains related to holidays or breaks. Almost 30.000 such new domains were registered in May&nbsp;2023. This corresponds to a 25% increased compared to the same period last year. Some&nbsp;360 of these websites were malicious or suspect. In addition, several <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Phishing&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;This term is made up from the words &amp;quot;password&rdquo; and &amp;quot;fishing&rdquo;. Attackers use &amp;lt;a href=&amp;quot;https:\/\/www.ebas.ch\/en\/phishing\/&amp;quot;&amp;gt;phishing&amp;lt;\/a&amp;gt; to obtain confidential data from unsuspecting Internet users. These might for instance involve access data for your e-banking facility or account information of online shops. Perpetrators abuse their victims&rsquo; good faith and helpfulness by purporting to be, say, an employee of a trustworthy financial institution.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;There are a variety of other variations such as Vishing (voice phishing or phone phishing), Smishing (SMS \/ text phishing) and QR phishing in addition to classic phishing via e-mail.&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\n\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>phishing<\/span> campaigns on this theme have been discovered.<\/p>\n<p>Here some tips on how to book your holidays without jeopardising your online security:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use trustworthy websites<\/strong>: Only book your holidays on well-known and established travel websites or directly via the official website of a hotel or airline. Make sure the website is secure and makes use of an encrypted connection (which can be identified from a lock symbol in the address bar).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check reviews and information<\/strong>: Read reviews by other travellers to ensure accommodations or resorts are reputable and trustworthy. Pay attention to booking conditions, cancellation policies and any potential hidden costs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Beware of offers which sound too good to be true<\/strong>: Remain sceptical of extremely inexpensive offers or unexpected prize notifications. These could be fraudulent and serve to steal your personal data. If an offer sounds too good to be true, it might not just be genuine.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use a safe payment method<\/strong>: When booking, use a safe payment method, such as payment on account.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remain cautious about sharing personal information<\/strong>: Only disclose information which is absolutely required and never share sensitive data such as passwords via unsafe channels. Be wary of suspicious e-mails or phone calls asking you for personal information.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use secure networks<\/strong>: Avoid booking your holidays via public <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;This is a cable-free, local network or a wireless network. This can also be called Wi-Fi.&lt;\/div&gt;\n\"  data-mobile-support=\"0\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex='0' role='link'>Wi-Fi<\/span> networks, as these could provide insufficient security. Use a personal network or a <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Virtual Private Network (VPN)&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Designates a virtual private (self-contained) communications network. VPNs are generally used to connect a device via an existing (unsecured) network, for instance the Internet, to another (secured) one, for instance a company network, in a safe manner.
