This case dramatically illustrates just how important data back-ups can be.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most frequent causes of data loss, particularly in an SME environment, is a cyber attack similar to the one which Garmin suffered at the end of July caused by <span class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Ransomware&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;This is malware which encrypts files on a device and any network drives and storage media connected with it (e. g. external hard drives, cloud storage media) and demands a ransom payment.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;&amp;lt;img class=&amp;quot;alignnone size-medium wp-image-4199&amp;quot; src=&amp;quot;https:\/\/www.ebas.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/ransomware-300x226.png&amp;quot; alt=&amp;quot;&amp;quot; width=&amp;quot;300&amp;quot; height=&amp;quot;226&amp;quot; \/&amp;gt;&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;\/div&gt;\n\" data-mobile-support=\"0\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{&quot;attribute&quot;:&quot;data-cmtooltip&quot;, &quot;format&quot;:&quot;html&quot;}]\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">ransomware<\/span>. They very narrowly avoided a total collapse. Meanwhile, their systems are up and running again&nbsp;&ndash;&nbsp;but some things apparently didn&rsquo;t quite go as planned.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is not always possible to prevent such an attack. Back-ups to provide for quick recovery of your data as completely as possible constitute one of the crucial basic protection measures an SME should take. This requires the implementation of an effective data <span class=\"glossaryLink\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Back-up&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Data back-up, where electronic information (data) is copied to an external storage medium (e. g. an external hard drive).
