They are strange, they are complex, we often need them and still we forget them ... we are talking about passwords. Today is «World Password Day»!

Passwords are still the most common and most frequently used keys inside any electronic environment. They protect access to sensitive and private data. The «World Password Day» is intended to remind you just how important these keys are.

The following rules pertaining to the handling of passwords will ensure you are better protected:

  • It consists of at least 10 characters
  • It includes numbers, upper and lower case letters as well as special characters
  • There are no keyboard sequences such as «asdfgh» or «123456»
  • It does not consist of any word in a known language – i. e. your password should not make any sense
  • Don’t always use the same password everywhere
  • Don’t save your password unencrypted

It is not really that hard to draw up a secure password! Below we explain how you can create a secure password in an easy manner, and remember it just as easily:

  • Take a sentence you can remember well, and create your password from the respective first letters and numbers of every word:
«My daughter Tamara was born on 19 January!»
  • This creates a password consisting of a random character string which you can easily remember:

The above rules for secure passwords generally apply to all passwords. Since passwords pose a variety of security risks, with e-banking for instance, an additional security element (e. g. TANs) is used. In these cases, some «limited» rules (e. g. minimum length only 6 characters) could also apply. You should still use secure passwords wherever possible which comply with the rules set out above.
