Rootkit

A rootkit is a type of malware providing cybercriminals with covert, privileged access to a computer system. It hides deeply inside operating systems, firmware or hardware components to conceal files, processes and connections and allow for such activities as data theft, monitoring or the installation of additional software this way – without being detected. The term is made up from “root” (administrator account with Unix) and “kit” (software toolkit).
