New fraud cases involving Twint

Recently, there has been another spate of reported scam attempts involving the Twint payment app. Caution is the best remedy.

There currently is a number of different media reports about Twint playing a central role in recent fraud cases yet again. Criminals have for instance made purchases using Twint for payments in online shops and to the SBB, of which their victims were totally unaware.

According to Twint and financial institutions, there are no known cases of the app itself having been compromised. The assumption therefore is that victims have unwittingly provided their Twint access data to some fraudsters – for instance by entering their data on fake websites (phishing).

It takes caution and attention to prevent such scams. The most important technical measure involves using two-factor authentification for Twint and online services. Do take note of our article on phishing and on mobile and contactless payments in this regard, too.
