How to safely use Twint & Co.

Mobile payment methods are highly popular. But not just with consumers – with criminals, too. Protect yourself!

Over the last few months, the number of fraud cases involving mobile payment methods such as Twint or PayPal has seen a large increase. These methods seem to offer lucrative opportunities for fraud to Internet criminals: Cases are very widespread, and it is very simple – so that there are many potential victims, often falling for this type of fraud more easily than with classic e-banking methods, where levels of security awareness nowadays are often higher.

Some popular fraud methods for instance use faked e-mails, text or WhatsApp messages containing a link or QR code leading to a fake log-in page. Criminals also like to use certain features, for instance the option to request money (Twint) or pay without an account (PayPal) to dupe their victims.

So never mind how handy such payment services are – you should always remain cautious. Do take note of our Recommendations for mobile payments and contactless payments.
